EPIRBs vs PLBs: What’s the Difference and Why They Matter for Marine Safety

When venturing offshore, safety should never be left to chance. Two essential tools that can mean the difference between rescue and tragedy are EPIRBs (Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons) and PLBs (Personal Locator Beacons). While both serve to alert search and rescue authorities in an emergency, understanding their key differences and roles is crucial for boaters, sailors, and adventurers alike.

What is an EPIRB?

EPIRBs are designed specifically for maritime use. When activated—either manually or automatically if submerged—they transmit a distress signal via satellite to the nearest Rescue Coordination Center (RCC). This signal includes your location and vessel identity.

Key Features of EPIRBs:

  • Required on most commercial vessels and highly recommended for offshore recreational boats.
  • Automatic or manual activation.
  • Float and transmit while in the water.
  • Battery life typically lasts 48 hours or more.
  • Must be registered with national authorities (e.g., NOAA in the U.S.).

What is a PLB?

Personal Locator Beacons, or PLBs, are portable distress beacons intended for individuals rather than vessels. While they operate on the same 406 MHz frequency and use the same satellite system as EPIRBs, they’re manually activated only and can be used in both marine and land-based emergencies.

Key Features of PLBs:

  • Compact, lightweight, and easily attached to a life jacket, belt, or backpack.
  • Manual activation only.
  • Ideal for kayakers, solo anglers, hikers, and crew members.
  • Battery life usually lasts 24-30 hours.
  • Also require registration.

Why You Need One (or Both)

For offshore boating or long passages, an EPIRB is considered essential equipment. It provides a reliable, long-lasting distress alert that’s tied to your vessel, and the automatic deployment offers peace of mind in catastrophic situations.

PLBs, on the other hand, are perfect for enhancing personal safety, especially when you’re separated from the main vessel—kayaking, paddleboarding, or working on deck alone. In many scenarios, a combination of both EPIRB and PLB offers the best coverage, ensuring the safety of both the crew and the vessel.

In the event of an emergency at sea, the speed and accuracy with which help can find you is everything. Whether you’re a weekend boater, professional mariner, or backcountry adventurer, having a properly registered EPIRB or PLB can save your life.

Remember: Rescue starts when you’re found—so make sure you can be.
