Question: Is this cable a Yamaha bus to NMEA 2000 bus? I am unsure if the J1939 is a Garmin specific connection or if it is a standard NMEA 2000 connection

J1939 is a specific protocol. Similar to NMEA2000 but different and not compatible. Garmin puts a J1939 socket on the back of many of their displays. This cable allows you to connect an engine with J1939 output to a Garmin display directly with J1939 input. So this is not a NMEA2000 cable, nor is it compatible.
