Multifunctions Displays - What you need to know
Garmin offers 5 series of multifinction displays. The 700 Series, 4000
Series, 5000 Series, 6000 Series, and 7000 Series. All series have the similar
basic functionality in that they can all act as GPS/Chartplotters, Fishfinders
and Radars. All also have the ability to do XM Weather and NMEA 2000.
The
Garmin 700 Series is their basic 7" Touchscreen Multifunction
Display. It has a built-in GPS antenna. It is not networkable but will interface via
NMEA0183 or NMEA2000 with just about any unit on the market. The unit comes in 2
configurations. The version with a built-in Fishfinder has a "S" after the model
number (example 740S). The unit that does not have the Fishfinder has no "S"
(example 740). These units either come preloaded with US coastal charts or with
a worldwide base map. Translated - the units with maps cover anything tidal
along the US coast in fine detail. The units with basemaps basically have no
maps on them and will need the optional Vision Card. Preloaded units have a
4 in the middle of the model (example 740S) and base units have a 2 in the
middle (example 720).
Garmin 700 Series Lineup
- 720 - GPS w/Basemap, 7" Screen
- 720S - GPS/FF Combo w/Basemap, 7" Screen
- 740 - GPS w/US Coastal Maps, 7" Screen
- 740S - GPS/FF Combo w/US Coastal Maps, 7" Screen
The Garmin 4000 and 5000 Series have the exact same
functionality, however the 4000 series uses buttons and the 5000 series is
touchscreen. These units use external GPS antennas and are fully networkable
with other 4000, 5000, 6000, and 7000 Series displays. To make them have
Fishfinder capability a Garmin GSD-22 is required. These units have a hub built into
them with 3 network ports enabling them to accept any combination of Garmin
network add-ons like radar or XM weather. They are also capable of display video
from sources like a DVD Player or Camera. Please see below for how to decipher
model numbers.
The Garmin 6000 and 7000 Series are their
flagship units, with the most capability and fastest speeds. In addition to
doing everything the 4000 and 5000 series units, they also have Garmin's new
G-Motion charting performance which puts near real-time data on the screen. If
you want blazing fast perfomance these units are for you. See below for
deciphering model numbers.
Here is how to decipher the model
numbers. Lets use the 4212 as our example - the first digit is the
series (In this case 4000 series). the second digit refers to cartography (a "0"
means no preloaded charts, and a "2" means coastal USA charts are pre-loaded),
and the third and fourth digits are the screen size (in this case 12")
- Garmin 4000, 5000, 6000, and 7000 series units are fully networkable, so
you can freely share data and peripherals like radar domes among screens.
Garmin does not require a network hub like other brands as each unit literally
has a hub built into the back.
- When you add a Garmin G2 Vision Chart to these units a couple of new
features get unlocked. The first is "auto Guidance". This feature enables you
to put in a destination and the system will automatically generate a route for
you to that destination. It takes your boat's depth and height into account to
build a safe route. The 2nd feature is the "Fish Eye" view. This is a 3D view
of the ocean bottom from behind your boat. The Vision chart adds several other
features too, like high resolution satellite imagery to overlay on land and
water, photos of points of interest like marinas and harbors, and it gives a
3D look to Garmin's Mariners Eye page which is their version of the highway
function units have had for years to assist in following a route.

Peripherals - After you pick your screen size then pick your
add-ons.
Radar - All Garmin Radars are 4kW. They are offered in
multiple sizes. Domes in 18" and 24" and Open Arrays in 4' and 6'. Any radar is
compatible with any radar-capable Garmin display. The most basic domes will be
great for Navigation while the 6kW+ open arrays will work for finding birds for
fisherman.
Fishfinder - To make any Garmin 4000, 5000, 6000 or 7000
Series display a Fishfinder you just need to add the GSD-22 Sounder Module. This
is module has up to 2kW of power and is Digital. When connected to your Garmin
network it will make any unit on the network a Fishfinder. The GSD-22 does not
include a transducer.
XM Weather/Audio - To make your Garmin un it display weather
you will need this. It will give you real-time weather overlayed on your chart,
and XM audio that can output to your stereo. Everything needed is included.
Bundles - A few of the more popular Garmin Units are sold as
a Bundle to include the Display, Fishfinder Module, and Weather Module. You will
still need to add a transducer.
GPS and GPS/Fishfinder Combo Units - What you need to
know.
- Garmin has a series of GPS and GPS/FF Combo units called the 400
and 500 series. None of these are touchscreen. With these units the first
digit of the model number refers to screen size, the second digit refers to
cartography included, and the third digit is the screen quality ("1" is the
basic screen, "6" is the high resolution screen). So the GPSMAP 546 has a 5"
screen, USA Coastal Charts, and the high res screen.
- If the unit is a combo unit which includes Fishfinder
functionality there will be an "S" after the model number. So the 541S would
be a Combo unit, the 541 would not.
- The Combo units that end in "6" like the 546S also have a 1kW
digital Fishfinder, which is an improvement over the 541S.
- All of these units have built in GPS antennas so no external
antenna is required. If you have a hardtop or otherwise need an external
antenna they can be easily added, its called the GA-29.

heard.
